Do you miss the "variations?"

Postby sfamiler » Sun Jul 27, 2014 10:08 pm

Do you miss the variations we used to see more often up until the last few years?

I know we do get a lot of color variations now, but it has become all too predictable. Most releases now will give us 2 color variations each year, sometimes 3 if one is an exclusive to a particular retailer. But it seems the days of short-printed variations are over. I miss hunting for a hard-to-find car with a different set of wheels, or a different color interior, tinted or un-tinted windows, and many of the other small variations we used to look for. Some of the releases from 10-15 years ago would have 3 or 4 wheel variations but you just don't see that anymore.

I think Mattel needs to bring that back. Add some unpredictability to our hobby.

What do you think?

I agree that the days of yesteryear are gone, but today's variations are mixed in 3 pack, 5 pack, 9 packs. For instance, the dark blue and the light blue '85 Camaro IROC-Z is released only in various multipacks. Currently, I have a rare '70 Camaro from a 3 pack.

So far, it is the only one in existence. Another collector found the same car but with OH-5 wheels and is (so far) the only one in existence and it is in a blisterpak. The variations are out there, some are more difficult to find then others.

I believe, that Mattel got creative and decided to make more money by placing these exclusive variations in multipacks.

I also think that there are still a good number of variations out there, today.
It may not be to the extent of the past years but several cars are showing up with wheel, interior, and base changes.
I can remember a certain burgandy Lexus model from the past, that I found with 8 different sets of wheels. I don't think I would like to have that number of changes today. It seems to me that most of the variations today are harder to find. There are probably a lot more people looking for them now than there used to be, though.
I think, overall, I wouldn't mind seeing a little more variations show up.
Good topic Trenton! Thanks for posting it.

I agree... I used to hunt Hot Wheels every night because I had to to get all the variations, they changed that fast. These days it seems "it is what is" has taken over. No multiple of country of origin basses, no tampo color changes, nothing to separate the men from the boys.... lol
